benefits of a pause in a SharePoint workflow -


in 2013 sharepoint farms have worked in, have noticed lot of "heavy lifting" workflows fail ( updating on 3 thousand items ).

usually failure coincides in 5-6 minute interval. work around, putting 1 minute pause in beginning fixes issue ( workflow able process.. on hour, , complete ).

i have read benefits of inserting pause, push workflow processed timer service ( owstimer.exe ) rather normal sharepoint processing ( w3wp.exe ), having difficulty on locating differences or benefits of running workflow in timer service is.
